Know The Types Of Metals Used In Metal Plating/Finishing

Metal plating or metal finishing is a process that describes the application of a layer of coating to the metal to give it the desired result. These metal finishes often use non-ferrous substances, non-ferrous metals in metals like zinc, gold, copper, tin, or chromium. It can also be used to clean the surface of the metal to prepare it for final production. Various trusted companies offer plating services for different uses.

On the other hand, many kinds of metal finishes use a combination of chemical, electrical, and mechanical procedures to achieve the desired result. Electroplating, a process that is arguably one of the most common types of plating, involves metal deposition. The metal for plating is first dissolved and then transferred onto the desired metal surface.

Here, let us discuss the different types of metal finishes procured from different types of metal.

Types of Metals Used in Metal Finishes

Generally, there are five types of metal finishing used by any stamping company, which are as follows-

Metal Plating, Blasting, Basic Coating, Powder Coating and Abrasive Method.

Metal Plating

It is one of the widely performed finishes done using a chemical bath to change the surface with a thin layer of metals other than this. Most of these metals use chromium, cadmium, zinc and nickel. The finishing is done using electroplating, which is carried out by generating an electric current to coat or cover metal at the base. After this, it goes through an autocatalytic process that helps to stabilize the reaction. As this whole procedure is a little complex, it must be executed by some reliable plating services providers.

Blasting

Blasting methods are of two types: shot peening and sand-blasting. Sand-blasting is used for highly uniform and matte texture, involving abrasives like sand or metal pellets. The shot peening method involves compression to create stress on the metal’s surface.

Sand-blasting gives a smooth and clean surface texture, while shot peening uses a cold working method to prevent tensile stress, which can naturally occur in the manufacturing processes.

Basic Coating

It is one of the most basic types of finishing that involves using water or paints, which are oil-based. These provide light and thin metal protection, which is mostly inexpensive. However, it will still help to protect the metal against corrosion. On the other hand, if the used metal is naturally strong, a thin coating of paint will be enough to create a durable product.

Powder Coating

This finishing is no different than that of paint, but the only minor difference is the application of powder coat gives better durability. The procedure involves curing through the heat for the dry thermoplastic polymer powder on the surface of the metal. As a result, this type of coating generally produces three primary finishes: textured finish, matte and glossy surface. Besides, one more benefit of using this coating is that this can hide minor defects present in the base of the material.

Abrasive Method

This method is mainly used to decrease the roughness of the surface of the metal, which generally occurs after machining. It counts the roughness measured as micro inches. Primary abrasives use four processes: polishing, buffing, honing and finally lapping. Also, precision holds crucial ground in these methods. Smoothing the surface of the metal is the primary aim of using this method, and it is done by rubbing the surface of the mating parts.

Anodization

The company that performs plating services knows the value of the importance of anodization. Although unique to only aluminium, it is done via an electrolytic passivation method, which is used to enhance the thickness of the oxide layer present naturally.

To conclude, there are various methods of types of metal finishing, but some of them are used more than others. It all depends on the use. Metal stamping companies widely perform the above-listed processes. These metal stamping finishings offered by companies offer durable yet aesthetic end products. Also, metal finishes open new chances for both suppliers and manufacturers that are worth appreciating!
